International relations (IR) or International studies (IS) represents the study of foreign affairs and global issues among states within the international system, including the roles of states, inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs), and multinational corporations (MNCs). It is both an academic and public policy field, and can be either positive or normative as it both seeks to analyze as well as formulate the foreign policy of particular states. It is often considered a branch of political science (especially after 1988 UNESCO nomenclature), but an important sector of academia prefer to treat it as an interdisciplinary field of study.

Apart from political science, IR draws upon such diverse fields as economics, history, international law, philosophy, geography, social work, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and cultural studies / culturology. It involves a diverse range of issues including but not limited to: globalization, state sovereignty, ecological sustainability, nuclear proliferation, nationalism, economic development, global finance, terrorism, organized crime, human security, foreign interventionism and human rights.

What is the best school to attend for undergraduate for studying International Relations?
Q. I'm applying to college and I would like to know what the best places are for studying International Relations/International Studies. In the future, I want to maybe work in the Foreign Service or the Un, or something like that, as long as I can travel and learn foreign languages!

How did September 11 attacks impact international relations?
Q. I have to write a paper on the terrorists attacks on NY. One of the things I want to include is how it impacted international relations. All I got is that America's security became stronger. Either you were with us or against us. Any ideas? Everything is appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

A. The best approach on this subject do a google search and see what u can learn. But take the perspective not from the American side but from the European side. Like why did the protest us going into Iraq? just an example.

How is a major in Journalism and International Relations?
Q. I want to become something that requires a lot of travelling. I know Arabic and Urdu and Spanish... and am wanting to learn more languages such as Chinese and Korean. I feel like I want to minor in Chinese and Korean and take Journalism and international relations... should I take political science too? What should I take? I need help deciding. And also one lame question: how many classes make a major? how many classes make a minor?

A. I don't know about journalism, but I am an IR (international relations) major. At my school International Relations is a part of the Political Science department, I would assume this is true at your school also if it is studying IR theory. This would be a good question to ask your advisor if it is not since I am not sure what it would include then. The number of credits needed for a major and minor are different depending on the school and the program. For example, I am double majoring in IR and Spanish. My IR major needs more classes than my Spanish major. This information should be included in your school's course catalog and is also probably on the website.
