The conservative coalition, in the United States, was an unofficial Congressional coalition bringing together the conservative majority of the Republican Party and the conservative, mostly Southern, minority of the Democratic Party. Aside from 1949 to 1951, it controlled the United States Congress from 1939 to 1961 and remained a potent force until the mid-1980s.

What is the conservative coalition?
Q. And what holds it together? Libertarians should hate Neo-Cons. The religious right should disdain capitalists. It incorperates some of the most poor as well as the most rich. Some of the most uneducated and some of our greatest intellectuals. It has both Isolationists and those who call for American world domination. And yet these christians and economists, rich and poor, smart and dumb, pro-government and anti-government have somehow formed a viable party that has less infighting then democrats usually do. What the hell holds it together? It has to be more than anti-socialism, doesn't it?

A. It was that in the 1980s, they were united under a universally acceptable candidate, Ronald Reagan, who became a popular and successful two term President. The Republican party has enjoyed pretty good success since then until recently, three consecutive Reagan-Bush terms, and they had Congress for most of the Clinton adminstration and Bush 43 administration. A lot of the "Reagan Democrats" defected to Clinton but they have to have gotten some of them back briefly. But because GWB has become so unpopular the future of this coalition has been left in doubt, its going to be interesting to watch where the party goes from here, this GOP primary is going to be one of the most interesting primaries in years.

Q. Which radical conservative group does the most harm to feminism and society? Pick one of these or add your own: 1) The religious right (Pat Robertson and the Christian Coalition) 2) The political right (Bush & Cheney, Pat Buchanan) 3) Conservative radio shock jocks (Rush Limbaugh) 4) The Anti-choice movement (James Dobson and Focus on the Family) 5) Anti-feminist groups (Concerned Women for America) or 6) Big Business (Walmart, the largest employer in the US, contributes millions to anti-feminist causes). Which radical conservative group does the most harm to feminism and society?

A. I'm not American, but in Canada, we get enough American content to pretty well understand what's going on there. And to me, there's no way to separate any of these groups from group #2. Unless there's a political structure that enables, supports, facilitates, advocates the other groups, those groups will have no following and/or economic backing. I'm not saying they wouldn't exist, I'm just saying they wouldn't be as powerful as they are currently. And all of them do damage to women, not just feminists, to women--and I will add they do damage to men as well. When gender roles are rigidly enforced, both sexes suffer. Your list is well thought-out...it's amazing the forces out there designed to control people's behaviour.

Who would you prefer to lead Canada, Conservatives, or Coalition of Lib, NDP & Bloc Quebecois (separatist)?
Q. If the coalition of Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois will happen, do you like them to Govern Canada? The Bloc Quebecois Leader Mr. Duceppe said that he still plan for Quebec sovereignty. Would you like to include the separatist to govern this country? Would you support their coalition?

A. I am a US citizen, not a Canadian, but I am fascinated with the current developments concerning your governing. The Bloc Quebecois are separatist in their ideology & formation, are they not? So, it would be hard to understand, as an outsider, how a significant role for this party would advance the aims common to all the provinces. N'est ce pas? It seems that a separatist sovereignist philosophy is antithetical to the goals of union although I readily agree to the Bloc's legitimate role within the House of Commons. I enjoyed greatly last night's interview by Mr. Mansbridge of Mr. Harper!
